How it works:

The central component of the system is a tag that is securely attached to the product/merchandise. These tags are either removed or deactivated at the point of purchase. The detection system (pedestals) at your store exits will set off an alarm alerting security staff if an active tag passes through the pedestals.

Different tags are used for different purposes.

Dispose able tags are deactivated at the till so that they do not set off the alarm on exit. The tags themselves are often visible as a label or magnetic strip. They are most often seen on books, CDs, and low value goods. The tags/labels themselves are extremely cheap and are used once off.

Reusable hard tags are larger and more visible than paper tags & magnetic strips. Because of this, they can also have a deterrent effect on casual shoplifters.

Another category of tags is “Benefit Denial” tags. These have ink inside of them, which is released if the tag is tampered with. The purpose of these tags are to make stolen product unusable or unsaleable to the thief.
